PRESS RELEASE

SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW

HARTFORD, ALABAMA

Due to substantial rainfall, there has been a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) event at the following location: manhole at 1272 North State Highway 123. Sewage has been released into a drainage ditch that flows into Dowling Branch and the City of Hartford wants to advise area residents and the public to avoid physical contact with waters and contaminated areas adjacent to the affected area.

At approximately 7:00 pm on April 23, 2020 a sewer overflow was reported by resident. Upon immediate investigation, raw sewer was flowing onto the ground from a manhole. On April 24, 2020, the utility crew cleaned the affected area to prevent any health risk to residents.

A major sewer rehab project was completed last year to prevent I & I. Long term plans include rehab projects to fix other I & I problem areas.

The City of Hartford is committed to protecting the health of the public and the environment. In partnering with our citizens to achieve this goal, the city welcomes and appreciates notifications from citizens if a sewer overflow is suspected. Citizens can notify our department by calling (334) 588-2245.
